Temporal
Mechanics Union is a community-based, multigenerational, all-ability
percussion ensemble. Our repertoire joins experimental and new music
with traditional rhythms.
Anyone
may join, no matter what his or her previous experience or musical
skill level. All the skills necessary to a particular performance
will be learned in rehearsal. The only requirements to becoming a
Mechanic are dedication, enthusiasm, and creativity.
The TMU repertoire follows two traditions. We play traditional &
folkloric rhythms from a variety of cultural sources, such as afro-cuban
bembe and rumba, Brazilian batucada, Arabic iqat and various West
African styles. We also seek out and create new works, performing
these in our chamber ensemble mode. We incorporate minimalism, art
of noises, soundscapes, chance music and found objects into our
performances. Many of the Mechanics regularly build and perform on
new instruments. We've also been very happy to premiere the new and
less-performed works of nascent and established composers.
Formed in 2002, TMU is resident at
Cowley
College. We present two major concerts a year, in May and
December, with other occasional gigs and presentations throughout
the year.
